UD Holds

University Division Academic Advising Holds will “hold” you from registering for classes for the next term until you meet with your UD academic advisor. The purpose of these holds is to initiate a conversation between you and your advisor about issues that impact your successful progress at IU. You will want to have holds on your record released before your enrollment date for the next term.

The UD Academic Advising holds are:

  • Advising

    Purpose:

Freshmen students, international students, and some groups of transfer students are expected to meet and discuss their plans for the next term with their UD academic advisor. The goal is to ensure students have the information and tools they need to successfully plan their education and navigate IU.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed in the next term until the hold is released.

    Release Procedure:

Discuss your plans for the upcoming term(s) in a scheduled appointment with your UD (or UD-affiliated) Academic Advisor. (If you are a new student, we will schedule your first advising appointment for you as a part of New Student Orientation and will release your hold at that time.)

  • English Requirement

    Purpose:

To encourage early development of fundamental writing skills, UD expects students to complete the English Composition requirement within their first 55 credit hours. Transfer students who enter UD with close to, or more than, 55 credit hours are expected to complete the composition requirement within the first two terms of Bloomington enrollment.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed in the next term until the Hold is released.

    Release Procedure:

Discuss your plans for completing the English Composition requirement in a scheduled appointment with your UD (or UD-Affiliated) Academic Advisor.

  • Major Declaration Required

    Purpose:

To ensure timely progress toward completion of a degree, UD expects students to declare an intended major no later than the term in which they will complete 56 credit hours.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed in the next term until the Hold is released.

    Release Procedure:

Discuss majors in a scheduled appointment with your UD (or UD-Affiliated) Academic Advisor.

  • Exceeds Hrs Certification

    Purpose:

To ensure timely progress toward degree completion, UD expects students to be admitted to a degree program no later than the beginning of the term following the one in which they complete 70 credit hours. Transfer students who enter UD with close to, or more than, 70 credit hours are expected to be admitted no later than the beginning of their third term of Bloomington enrollment.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed in the next term until the Hold is released.

    Release Procedure:

Discuss your plans for earning admission to your intended degree program in a scheduled appointment with your UD (or UD-Affiliated) Academic Advisor.

  • English Language Improvement

    Purpose:

Some international students are required to complete SLST-T101 English Language Improvement courses based on their performance on the Indiana English Proficiency Exam. This hold serves to encourage these students to complete their required SLST-T101 courses as early as possible.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed in the next term until the Hold is released or moved to the next term.

    Release Procedure:

For a temporary release to enroll for the next term, discuss your plans for completing your SLST-T 101 courses in a scheduled appointment with your UD (or UD-Affiliated) Academic Advisor. The hold will be permanently removed after you earn a passing grade in all required SLST-T101 courses.

(If you are a newly entering student, your first Advising Appointment will be scheduled for you as a part of New Student Orientation and your Hold will be released at that time.)

  • Academic Probation with Impact

    Purpose:

Students who do not meet UD Academic Standards are put on Academic Probation. These students are expected to complete the requirements of UD's Phoenix Program before enrolling for the next term.

    Impact:

No enrollment is allowed on any IU campus (multi-institutional) in the next term until the Hold is released. To determine if and how it may be possible to enroll in classes at another IU campus, UD students on academic probation would need to contact the other campus.

    Release Procedure:

For temporary release to enroll in the next term at IU Bloomington, schedule an appointment with your UD (or UD-Affiliated) Academic Advisor to verify the completion of UD's Phoenix Program. After increasing your Cumulative Grade Point Average to a minimum 2.00 and gaining good standing, the hold will be removed from your record.

  • Academic Dismissal

    Purpose:

Students who have been dismissed from the university for not meeting UD Academic Standards are not able to enroll in classes at IU Bloomington for at least the next fall or spring term following the Academic Dismissal.

    Impact:

No enrollment or university services allowed on any IU campus (multi-institutional).

    Release Procedure:

After academic dismissal, students must be Reinstated to continue to take classes at IU Bloomington. Contact OVPUE Records at (812) 855-7797, at udivrec@indiana.edu, or at Maxwell Hall 028 for details about Academic Dismissal and the requirements to be considered for a Reinstatement.
